Nestled along the great Ruaha river lies a hidden gem, the Amara Selous, a luxury boutique camp in the heart of the wilderness in Southern Tanzania. Situated in the heart of Southern Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve, Amara brings a whole new meaning to luxury accommodation in the heart of the African bush.

A day at Amara Selous

Wake up to the twittering of birds and strong coffee. Breakfast is followed by time for a mid-morning game activity (our managers will recommend ideal times for each activity – early morning walks, mid-morning or mid-afternoon game drives, and late afternoon boating safaris with sundowners – however guests are free to tailor-design their own days as & how they wish). Hearty lunches comprising of soups, salads, cold cuts & freshly baked breads are usually served in the main dining area of the camp, after which most guests choose to take a siesta, swim and relax before heading out for their afternoon & early evening activities. Sundowners are set up for guests on the riverside each evening before their three-course gourmet dinner is served by personal butlers at their chosen location – the main dining area, by the poolside, on the riverbank, on the private viewing deck of their suite, or under the stars out in the bush. At the end of their meal & night cap, the guests’ personal butlers make sure to note down their hot beverage of choices for their wake up calls for the next morning.

Wildlife watching

The Ruaha River is home to diverse water and bird life. During a game drive or boat safari, one can see hippos sleeping in the mud with their mouths open as crocodiles lurk in the background and variety of predator species (lion, cheetah) can be easily seen on any given day. The rare African wild dog can be seen and indigenous to Southern Tanzania’s eco system. The thrill of watching game can also be experienced by boat. Selous is the only place where river boat safaris are carried out and gives the guest an opportunity to see the teeming bird life (400 species per last count) that reside in the reserve or are migrating through. In the afternoons and early morning, one can see herds of antelope and elephants coming to drink.

About the Camp

The Amara Selous experience is designed to suit every traveler. Providing guests with lavish comfort in the middle of the African bush, Amara merges nature with extravagance for the best of both worlds.

The Camp and Chalets

Off the beaten track, yet only an hour flying time from Dar-Es-Salaam, Amara Selous is the perfect blend of real bush luxury with the surrounding beauty of the African wilderness. Facilities include 12 spacious river suites overlooking the perennial African wilderness, deluxe size beds, air conditioning, freshly pressed linen, personal butlers and beautiful outside seating areas featuring natural plunge pools ensures that our guests experience the very best of Wild Africa whilst relaxing in the lap of luxury. Additionally attached are secluded outdoor solar-heated showers where you can safely enjoy the snorts and antics of the resident hippos in the river. Common areas are lavish Victorian era interior yet modern enough where one can dock their iPod! The lodge has an infinity pool and provides in-room spa treatments.

Meals

Meals are carefully prepared every day depending on the season. Each day the chef prepares a spread of decadent creations using fresh meats, fruits and vegetables all locally sourced from Kisaki and Dar-Es-Salaam.

Families and Kids

This boutique beach resort is located on exclusive Manda Island off the shores of historic 12th century town Lamu town. The Lamu archipelago is a small islands with Lamu town as its provincial head quarters. The Majlis is only accessible by boat- a short 10 minute ride from Lamu.

A day at The Majlis

The pace of life The Majlis is notoriously leisurely and relaxed and we often find our guests more than happy to slow the rhythm of their lives accordingly! The day can begin with a long and unhurried breakfast before relaxing under a shady acacia tree or a dip in one of the two swimming pools. The more adventurous may wish to engage in one of the many activities on offer at The Majlis– windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing, kite surfing, or possibly a day-long excursion sailing a dhow around the islands of the archipelago. A visit to Lamu Town to learn more about the local Swahili culture and its fascinating history as part of the ancient spice trade route, is a must for any curious traveler.

History, Culture & Heritage

A visit to Lamu is for two primary reasons – first is to experience the fascinating local Swahili culture and the second is to relax on the white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean.

Dating back to the 12th Century and once the most important trade centre in East Africa, Lamu Town is now the oldest and best preserved example of Swahili settlement in East Africa.

Located on the breathtakingly beautiful Nanatha Half Moon Bay at the southern point of the larger Memba Bay on the Baixo do Pinda Peninsula in Northern Mozambique, Nuarro offers a unique “bush and beach” experience for the wander luster. The untouched beaches bordering mangrove swamps provides the visitor ample opportunity to see diverse bird and marine life, an dteh seasonal whale migration.

A day at Nuarro Lodge

Nuarro Lodge offers a unique bush/ beach experience and the perfect place to escape from busy hectic lives. The day could start leisurely with a long breakfast, watching the magnificent humpback whales breaching in the bay in front of the lodge (seasonal); or for the more energetic and early start to catch the tide and enjoy a few hours diving among stunning reefs around Nuarro. The afternoon could be spent kayaking through the cool mangroves, returning to the lodge via one of the secluded beaches, for an afternoon siesta or snorkeling the rocky pools.

Wildlife watching

Not a traditional safari destination, Nuarro is famed for its incredible diving and whale watching. The month of June heralds the return of the magnificent humpback whales as they pass along the front of the lodge feeding on the ample marine life in that area. Their presence of the coast of Mozambique from late June until late November as it is an excellent feeding ground for their young, who are then able to build up an important fat layer before returning to colder waters in December. Most guests are content to watch these fantastic creatures and their incredible display of breaching in the bay from the comfort of their private verandah or with a drink in hand relaxing by the bar. However, the more intrepid have enjoyed kayaking and diving between them as they show their splendid yet gentle strength.

Nuarro is an ideal place for diving – whether you be a learner or experienced diver, there is something for everyone. The area offers divers entry from the shore with a gradual slope towards the wall of the continental shelf, which is teeming with marine life and beautiful coral. Nuarro’s location means that the entire dive site is for their residents as no other lodge offers this activity.

About the Lodge

Located on the breathtakingly beautiful Nanatha Half Moon Bay at the southern point of the larger Memba Bay on the Baixo do Pinda Peninsula in Northern Mozambique.

The Lodge and Chalets

Nuarro comprises 12 luxury beachfront chalets (of which 10 have a family option with an upstairs area for twin beds). Each is strategically placed along the dunes for maximum privacy and minimal environmental impact. The lodge also had panoramic restaurant with cocktail bar, centralized activity centre with beach bar and reception area. All buildings are situated over the dunes, overlooking the enchanting Memba Bay. The buildings were designed to allow the sea breeze to pass through, thus providing great indoor climate conditions all year round. The lodge occupies an area close to 10 hectares with access to the main beach which is 2.5km in length plus many hidden places to relax the day away. Guests facilities include a library, TV, DVD room ,internet access and a fully equipped professional dive center.

Food preparation based on clients needs is very important at Nuarro. Most ingredients including fish are sourced locally and delivered fresh on a daily basis. Every effort is made to meet the client’s expectations.

Families and Kids

Nuarro is family friendly and allows children above the age of 8 years.

Eco-friendly facility.

Energy supply for the whole lodge is based on a hybrid system of solar panels, wind turbine and batteries, with a back-up generator to recharge the batteries whenever necessary or to supply emergency power. This method ensures around the clock electrical supply as well as optimal clean energy usage. Dry sanitation systems are used throughout the lodge to optimize water consumption. And the hot water system is generated by solar panels.

Situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau, Ol Malo is nestled into a rugged escarpment looking out across the time-honored lands of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.

A day at Ol Malo

Guests are woken up each morning to hot tea/coffee and home made biscuits, brought to the rooms – a perfect way to be woken in Africa, if the dawn chorus has not done that already! A full English breakfast can then be taken in either the dining room or in the bush amongst the animals of the wild and spectacular scenery. The morning’s activities could include walking on the plains above the lodge or the valleys below, camel riding, horseback riding or viewing the fabulous game from a safari vehicle. A picnic lunch beside the Ewaso Nyiro River is often followed by an afternoon siesta, and the day is perfectly rounded off with a visit to the Samburu village to learn more about the culture and lives of this fascinating tribe.

Return back to the camp for a well deserved shower and cocktail prior to dinner.

Wildlife watching

The plains and dense bush round Ol Malo and the general Lakipia region contain an enormous number of species – some unique to the area. This is the birthplace of mankind and home to some of the greatest bio-diversity on earth. Those with an inclination to take in the wonders of the natural world will have a full program of events to cover. On any given day- one can find elephant, kudu, leopard, hippo, buffalo and the elusive wild dog.,

About the Ol Malo Lodge & Ol Malo House

Situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau, Ol Malo is nestled into a rugged escarpment looking out across the time-honored lands of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.

Promote sustainable and healthy communities

Capture significant cultural values and heritage

Incorporate natural materials wherever possible and practicable.

Oliver’s Camp is situated in the remote south-eastern part of the park, in the middle of Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park’s un-spoilt wilderness. The camp is ideally placed to access the yearly migrations of wildlife, and to view impressive concentrations at waterholes and in the spectacular Silale swamps.

About the Lodge

Originally established in 1952, Mweya Safari Lodge is located on a peninsula within the heart of the Queen Elizabeth National Park overlooking the Kazinga channel and surrounded by the magical, three spiked, otherworldly Rwenzori Mountains aptly described as the ‘mountains of the moon’.

The Camp and Chalets

The lodge consists of 50 rooms (standard, deluxe and presidential) and also consists of a pool, bar and dining area, outdoor lounge as well as a conferencing facility. The ‘safari luxurious’ interior décor meets colonial design with much of the original infrastructure having been carefully preserved. The spa at Mweya provides massages and other body treatments. A complete gym and steam room is also available.

Meals

Meals are carefully prepared every day depending on the season and ingredients are locally sources from surrounding farming communities. Breakfast is typically continental while lunch and dinners are a combination of barbeques, table d’hote and a la carte menus.

Families and Kids

Mweya is ideal for families. Nanny services are also available.

Eco-friendly facility.

The main camp is powered from the main grid and occasional generators. Water conservation is important and guests are encouraged to participate.
