Situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau, Ol Malo is nestled into a rugged escarpment looking out across the time-honored lands of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.

A day at Ol Malo

Guests are woken up each morning to hot tea/coffee and home made biscuits, brought to the rooms – a perfect way to be woken in Africa, if the dawn chorus has not done that already! A full English breakfast can then be taken in either the dining room or in the bush amongst the animals of the wild and spectacular scenery.  The morning’s activities could include walking on the plains above the lodge or the valleys below, camel riding, horseback riding or viewing the fabulous game from a safari vehicle.  A picnic lunch beside the Ewaso Nyiro River is often followed by an afternoon siesta, and the day is perfectly rounded off with a visit to the Samburu village to learn more about the culture and lives of this fascinating tribe.

Return back to the camp for a well deserved shower and cocktail prior to dinner.

Wildlife watching

The plains and dense bush round Ol Malo and the general Lakipia region contain an enormous number of species – some unique to the area. This is the birthplace of mankind and home to some of the greatest bio-diversity on earth. Those with an inclination to take in the wonders of the natural world will have a full program of events to cover. On any given day- one can  find elephant, kudu, leopard, hippo, buffalo and the elusive wild dog.,

About the Ol Malo Lodge & Ol Malo House

Situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau, Ol Malo is nestled into a rugged escarpment looking out across the time-honored lands of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.

The Lodge & House

Built, owned and managed by the Francombe family, with the help of the Samburu people, Ol Malo has established a reputation for first class service and tireless attention to detail.

Every room in the intimate four bedroom lodge and beautiful six bedroom house is individually decorated, blending traditional local style with luxurious hand woven furnishings and thoughtful touches – a home away from home. Each spacious room has an en suite bathroom and cascading shower, an oversize hot tub and private verandah.

Meals

Meals are family style affair as if staying at someones private house. Lunch is typically a buffet while dinners ar a 3-course fixed menu. Food is sourced locally while the meat comes form the Ol Malo farm itself. With the intimacy of the camp, it is a pleasant atmosphere with the open style setting. The property also offers bush breakfasts and romantic candlelit bush dinners upon request. Drinks are included in the price of the stay.

Families and Kids

Ol Mayo is family friendly and allows children of all ages. The lodge provides a listening service while parents are having drinks and dinner and are away from their rooms at night. Should a child wake the parents will be called immediately.

Children are also entertained including face painting in local tribal colors, treasure hunt around the Ol Malo grounds, conservation and nature studies, cooking African meals on a bush stove and picnics in the bush.

Eco-friendly facility & Corporate Social Responsibility.

Ol Mayo is eco-friendly with a consistent use of solar energy, recycling of “grey” water re-used for landscaping. Drinking water is purified by reverse osmosis and all glass and plastic waste is used creatively to make ornaments or recycled appropriately for re-use. Because of constant water shortages in the Samburu area, teh lodge is very creative in usage and preservation.

Ol Malo has created the Ol Malo Trust for the Samburu people which follows the following principles:

  • Assist with the development of the Samburu people’s personal and professional education, with a view to increased employment opportunities, conservation of the environment and sustainable health and hygiene practices.
  • Provide a safety net during severe environmental conditions
  • Provide an income stream for Ol Malo Designs, its employees, sub-contractors, suppliers and communities
  • Promote sustainable and healthy communities
  • Capture significant cultural values and heritage
  • Incorporate natural materials wherever possible and practicable.
  • The Trust aims to improve the living standards of the Samburu, but we will only do so at the invitation of the people and with their full involvement.
  • Work within the boundaries of the Samburu culture and their traditions, and not deviate for its own benefit or ease
  • put the Samburu culture first, and maintain and encourage the Samburu traditional way of life.
