Rhino Lodge is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)- home to the famous Ngorongoro crater which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world.

Rhino Lodge is located at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater – a UNESCO world heritage site and part of the northern safari circuit.

A day at Rhino Lodge

Wake up to the sounds of birds. After breakfast guests leave and spend the whole day on safari in the Ngorongoro Crater with a packed lunch. The crater floor is teeming with game such as lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhino and flamingoes. Later in the afternoon one returns to warm up at the fire place in the dining room. For those staying for a longer period of time nature walks can be organized with the return to the lodge for lunch. From the veranda one can admire Oldeani Mt and the wildlife passing by.

Wildlife watching

The Crater area is a caldera with practically every plains mammal and bird species residing there. The area also experiences the annual migration with an increase in wildebeest populations. There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly a spectacular African safari experience and the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black-maned males. There are lots of colorful flamingoes and a variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor. More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. Other game include leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts.

About the Lodge

The Lodge is part of the Adventure Camps of Tanzania portfolio of tourist properties. While most of their properties are in southern Tanzania, Rhino Lodge is the first property catering to the northern safari circuit.

The Lodge and Chalets

The lodge consists of 24 rooms and built from an extension from a restored colonial home that once housed the first conservator of the NCA. The rooms are built in two wings extending from the main restaurant.  The restaurant is the main social area and has full windowed walls that overlook a magnificent view of the hillside forest.   All rooms have balconies with forest views and the grazing area of the buffaloes, zebra, waterbuck and elephants. The rooms décor are very simple using earth tones with splashes of red- a color most commonly tied to the clothing that the local Masai herders wear. Hardwood furniture is used and manufactured locally from artisans.

Meals

Meals are carefully prepared every day depending on the season. Much of the food comes from the farm run by the owners in Mufindi. Breakfast is typically continental while lunch is a buffet. Dinner- is a 3-course prix fixe in a fusion of African, Asian and European delicacies.

Families and Kids

Rhino Lodge is family friendly and allows children. There are no nanny services, and parents need to supervise their children.

Eco-friendly facility.

The camp is powered using generators. Water conservation is important and guests are encouraged to participate.
