This boutique beach resort is located on exclusive Manda Island off the shores of historic 12th century town Lamu town. The Lamu archipelago is a small islands with Lamu town as its provincial head quarters. The Majlis is only accessible by boat- a short 10 minute ride from Lamu.
A day at The Majlis
The pace of life The Majlis is notoriously leisurely and relaxed and we often find our guests more than happy to slow the rhythm of their lives accordingly! The day can begin with a long and unhurried breakfast before relaxing under a shady acacia tree or a dip in one of the two swimming pools. The more adventurous may wish to engage in one of the many activities on offer at The Majlis– windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing, kite surfing, or possibly a day-long excursion sailing a dhow around the islands of the archipelago. A visit to Lamu Town to learn more about the local Swahili culture and its fascinating history as part of the ancient spice trade route, is a must for any curious traveler.
History, Culture & Heritage
A visit to Lamu is for two primary reasons – first is to experience the fascinating local Swahili culture and the second is to relax on the white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean.
Dating back to the 12th Century and once the most important trade centre in East Africa, Lamu Town is now the oldest and best preserved example of Swahili settlement in East Africa.

Set on the idyllic Manda Island in the Lamu archipelago, The Majlis is a luxury 25 room boutique hotel with the ambience, comfort and intimacy of a private home. Each of the hotel’s air-conditioned rooms is unique in character and style, and features traditionally high-beamed ceilings and terraces with spectacular views of the beach, landscaped gardens or mangrove forests. Guests can also enjoy a private white sand beach and two beautiful swimming pools, built in the shade of the indigenous acacia and palm trees.
Meals
The Majlis is renowned for its excellent cuisine and two well-stocked bars. Specialty cuisine includes International, Italian (seafood, pasta, wooden pizza oven and home-made ice cream) and Japanese dishes. The Hotel’s spectacular makuti thatched restaurant offers the islands best local, seasonal produce in an exquisite setting with breathtaking panoramic views across the bay to Lamu and the lush green mangroves
Families and Kids
The Majlis is a family friendly hotel. The rooms are spacious to allow for extra beds for children and we also have interconnecting family rooms. Baby cots can be provided. The hotel offer a wide range of child friendly activities including a kids club in peak season. A nanny service can be provided upon request.

As consumers demand more eco-friendly vacation choices, The Majlis Hotel in Lamu is responding with energy-efficient and carbon friendly solutions. In line with the environmental policy of the hotel, The Majlis has invested in a solar panel system and energy efficient products, such as low consumption light bulbs. During the day, the hotel runs with a 24 Kva solar panel system which enables it to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide.

Daily scheduled flights from Nairobi to Lamu (with 3 carriers – Fly540, Safarilink and Air Kenya). The Lamu airport is a relaxed and enjoyable 15 minute boat ride from the hotel.
