Nestled along the great Ruaha river lies a hidden gem, the Amara Selous, a luxury boutique camp in the heart of the wilderness in Southern Tanzania. Situated in the heart of Southern Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve, Amara brings a whole new meaning to luxury accommodation in the heart of the African bush.
A day at Amara Selous
Wake up to the twittering of birds and strong coffee. Breakfast is followed by time for a mid-morning game activity (our managers will recommend ideal times for each activity – early morning walks, mid-morning or mid-afternoon game drives, and late afternoon boating safaris with sundowners – however guests are free to tailor-design their own days as & how they wish). Hearty lunches comprising of soups, salads, cold cuts & freshly baked breads are usually served in the main dining area of the camp, after which most guests choose to take a siesta, swim and relax before heading out for their afternoon & early evening activities. Sundowners are set up for guests on the riverside each evening before their three-course gourmet dinner is served by personal butlers at their chosen location – the main dining area, by the poolside, on the riverbank, on the private viewing deck of their suite, or under the stars out in the bush. At the end of their meal & night cap, the guests’ personal butlers make sure to note down their hot beverage of choices for their wake up calls for the next morning.
Wildlife watching
The Ruaha River is home to diverse water and bird life. During a game drive or boat safari, one can see hippos sleeping in the mud with their mouths open as crocodiles lurk in the background and variety of predator species (lion, cheetah) can be easily seen on any given day. The rare African wild dog can be seen and indigenous to Southern Tanzania’s eco system. The thrill of watching game can also be experienced by boat. Selous is the only place where river boat safaris are carried out and gives the guest an opportunity to see the teeming bird life (400 species per last count) that reside in the reserve or are migrating through. In the afternoons and early morning, one can see herds of antelope and elephants coming to drink.
