Located in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park area, this exclusive safari camp specializes in the very best game viewing with the highest international standards in luxury and service.

Sausage Tree Camp is set in the on the banks of the Zambezi River in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Parks best game viewing area.  The camp overlooks an expanse of narrow channels and low set reed islands teeming with game, with the magnificent Zambezi escarpment as the backdrop. The Lower Zambezi National Park gets its stunning scenery from the combination of 120km of Zambezi River front, the concentration of game in the valley floor and the backdrop of the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment- the Southern limit of the Great East African Rift Valley.   The park is opposite Mana Pools National Park, a World Heritage Site across the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe.

A day at Sausage Tree Camp

A typical day might start with morning tea or coffee served in your chalet, followed by either an early morning walking safari or a dawn game drive, returning to camp in time for breakfast in the camp. Relax by the pool followed by a leisurely meal in the shady dining room overlooking the Zambezi River. After lunch a siesta is advised, offering cool air wafting through. In the afternoon a choice of a boat safari or walking safari, returning as sunset turns the skyline dramatic orange on the wide river. After a shower treat yourself to sundowners in the bar followed by dinner.

Wildlife watching

The Zambezi River is home to diverse water and bird life. The Zambezi River provides a great opportunity to view game from boats and canoes, as well as great game viewing experiences by vehicle and on foot. Elephants, buffaloes, hippos, crocodile, lions, leopards, hyenas, impala, kudu, bushbuck and large variety of birds can be easily spotted during any activity and it is not uncommon to see a large herd of elephants close to the camp.

About the Lodge

Sleeping only 16 guests (5 standard rooms, 2 honeymoon suites, 1 two-bedroom family suite and the Kigelia House), Sausage Tree Camp is  a true bush experience with lavish attention to detail.  The central dining and bar area is fronted by an enormous teak deck overlooking the Zambezi River and low set reed islands teeming with game.  The large swimming pool is idyllically situated under Mahogany trees.

The Camp and Chalets

Each chalet consists of a white Bedouin tents giving guests maximum space with wide views of the surrounds. Local materials create a minimalist style in which teak furniture contrasts with pure white fabrics and flowing mosquito nets.

The camp’s dining room and bar are central in the camp where guests can gather to watch sunrises, enjoy sun downers and in general interact with one another. There is a common pool adjacent to the dining/ common areas. The honey moon suites and Kigela houses each have their own infinity pools overlooking the river.

The Camp provides spa/ massage services upon request.

Meals

Meals are carefully prepared every day depending on the season and ingredients are locally sources from surrounding farming communities. Breakfast is typically continental while lunch is a buffet. Dinner is traditionally the more elaborate with table service. The dining area of the lodge overlooks the river and beyond.

Families and Kids

Sausage Tree Camp is family friendly and allows children. The Camp’s Kigelia House is ideal for families. The house comes with your own private butler who is there to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. When booking the House you will also receive a private guide.

There are no nanny services, and parents need to supervise their children.

Eco-friendly facility.

The camp is powered using generators. Water conservation is important and guests are encouraged to participate.

Getting There

By Car:

Adventurous guests can drive from Lusaka to Chirundu (2 ½ hours) where they would meet our boat for a further 2 ½ hours cruise down to the camp.

Flying

Daily scheduled flights from Lusaka, Livingstone & Mfuwe to Jeki Airstrip. From Jeki it is approximately 20 minutes by vehicle to the river where you will be met by our boat for a 20 minutes cruise up to the lodge, looking at game along the way.

Staff & Service

Many of the staff at Sausage Tree Camp are hired from the surrounding villages and trained in the art of hospitality. Staff are articulate in English All staff members have completed mandatory secondary school at a minimum with camp guides generally with higher education qualifications.
