Stanley’s Kopje Camp is the sister lodge of Vuma Hills Camp both located in the Mikumi National Park within driving distance. This camp is seasonal and only open from June through February and is the only small, personalized camp in Mikumi. Set up on a rocky kopje on the Mkata flood plain, the camp presides over the Mwanamboga waterhole.
The property and Mikumi are located approximately 4 hours by car from Dar-Es-Salaam- Tanzania’s largest city. Safari flights can also be arranged from Dar-Es-Salaam. This 3,230 km² area abuts the larger Selous Game Reserve and its abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti.
A day at Stanley’s Kopje
Stanley’s Kopje Camp is an ideal location if you are short on time but long on an adventure. Its accessibility also makes it an attractive destination for any start to the southern safari circuit. Clients can take advantage of an extended stay by staying at the sister camp- Vuma Hills Camp for a different experience. After an early morning wake up call and hot coffee or tea, one departs in 4×4 safari vehicle scouting for wild life. The early morning animal movements are a sight worth seeing with antelope, buffalo and elephants parading to the watering holes before embarking on a day’s worth of grazing. Return back to the lodge for a well deserved rest and afternoon siesta. Depart of a mid-afternoon game drive. Guests often prefer to stay at the lodge and enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings.
Wildlife watching
A number of indigenous southern mammal species exist at Mikumi including elephants, lions, zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe and buffalo herds. Mikumi boasts of 400 species of local bird species including a variety of European migrants during the rainy season.
About the Camp
The camp is part of the Foxes Safari Camps portfolio of tourist properties in southern and western Tanzania and an ideal stop for those en route towards Lake Tanganyika or returning east wards. Exclusive camping ‘African’ style, combines creature comforts with the real bush experience; ideal for those wishing to be in the “thick of it” immersed amongst the wildlife.
The Camp and Chalets
Consisting of only 8 custom designed tent chalets built on raised wooden platform to give you unobstructed views of the vistas. Complete with shaded wooden veranda at the front and en suite bathroom facilities at the back, there is not much to be asked for.
The common areas consist of a dining lounge and fully stocked bar area adjacent to a dining room with amazing views of the plains.
Meals
Breakfast is typically a buffet setting, lunch a cold buffet, while dinner is prix fixe in a fusion of African, Asian and European delicacies. Coffee, tea and bar beverages are available throughout the day.
Families and Kids
Stanley’s Kopje Camp is family friendly and allows children over the age of 2. There are no nanny services, and parents need to supervise their children.
Eco-friendly facility.
The main camp is powered through photo voltaic cells connected to inverters. Stand by generators on limited schedules to conserve fuel. Water conservation is important and guests are encouraged to participate.

Staff & Service
Many of the staff at Stanley’s Kopje Camp are hired from the surrounding villages and trained in the art of hospitality. Staff are articulate in Swahili, English and their tribal dialect and some are even fluent in other European dialects. All staff members have completed mandatory primary school at a minimum.
